The gym can be intimidating no matter your experience level.

If you’re a beginner, strength training can be daunting to start on your own.

There are a lot of new things to take into consideration and it isn’t as easy as just showing up and lifting something heavy.

For example, knowing which exercises target what muscles, ideal rep ranges and how to progressively overload are just some things you need to know to get results.

Let’s discuss a few of them now.

Compound Lifting

One of the most effective ways to target multiple muscle groups at once is to incorporate compound lifts into your programming.

It goes without saying performing compound lifts such as the barbell squat, barbell bench press and deadlift will allow you to train more muscle groups in far less time for an efficient workout.

However, these lifts require more energy, coordination, and control to not only reduce your risk of injury but for them to be effective. Performing these lifts at the start of your workout when you are less fatigued will be safer and will help you achieve maximum results.

If you’re new to the gym, exploring compounds can be great if you’re on a time crunch or are looking to grow your strength fast.

Progressive Overload

Progressive overload is a training notion that involves gradually increasing the amount of stress placed on the body during exercise in varying ways.

This is important because it allows your body to continually adapt and become stronger over time. By progressively increasing the weight, reps, or intensity of your workouts, you will challenge your body in new ways and push it to its limits.

This is what strength training is all about.

If you’re looking to reach your fitness goals faster, progressive overload will be key for not only gaining strength but also preventing injuries as your body is able to handle increasing challenges as you progress.

Even though it can be scary trying something new, it’s important to know there’s a lot of information and support out there to help you along your fitness journey.
